Gymnasium
It is situated in the area outside the Lycourgean enclocure and near the building, which is known as Mithraeum. The foundations of a large rectangular building are visible with peristyle central courtyard, lateral rooms and a small porch on the front. It is dated to Roman times.
On the basis of its ground plan it has been interpreted as Gymnasium, the venue par excellence for the athletic training of youths, necessary in all ancient cities and sanctuaries, where the ancient Greek concept of «healthy mind in a healthy body» was put in action. The courtyard was the place to exercise while the lateral rooms were used for teaching and as spaces for the preparation of athletes.
